Dress Up Your Daybed!

July 4th, 2008 · No Comments

It’s true that daybeds are known to be very functional pieces because they can combine the utility of two pieces of furniture with the occupancy of just one. But because your daybed has a purpose in seating guests, it’s got to have a bit of style too, and that calls for a splash of color.

Perhaps the best way to add color to an otherwise plain daybed is to get a great cover for the mattress. Most daybeds have the same standard dimensions as the usual bed, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find yourself a cover that’s exactly the color, texture and size you want. If you can manage it, find a matching or complementing comforter to cover up and add a bit of volume to your daybed.

A cover and a comforter are very important items for turning an ordinary daybed into a design piece because they occupy the most surface area and, consequently, are some of the first things to be noticed. You could also find a sham or a skirt in lieu of or in addition to the items already mentioned. A combination of two or more of those items are usually available as sets at your favorite department store or online and should cost you around a hundred dollars tops.

Another great design idea for enhancing your daybed is adding daybed pillows. There are a lot of ways to adding daybed pillows to an existing daybed setup, and they vary based on the overall look that you want to achieve.

If you got a set and the included pillow covers match the size of your daybed pillows, then by all means use them so you’ll have a continuous and balanced design for the daybed. For a traditional look, you could try pairing up square, plain, solid-colored daybed pillows with patterned mattress covers, or vice versa. Similarly, a homier look can be had by following the same color plan (or you could introduce some patchwork or knitted items, if you have them) with a mix of regular-sized pillows, accent pillows and throw pillows.

If, on the other hand, you favor a more minimalist or modernist look, get a light-colored or neutral cover for the mattress and then a dark, contrasting color with a texture that matches the mattress cover for the covers of your daybed pillows. The two-tone color scheme adds an elegant, minimalist flair to your daybed. If you want to add just an extra touch, you can get bolster pillows with colors that match those of the daybed pillows that you already have.

Try as much as possible to get a daybed setup such that you can change the covers so that you have maximum flexibility with regards to how you dress up your daybed mattress and pillows. Just make sure that your colors complement with each other, don’t use more than a total of four distinct colors to keep things from getting too complicated and tie in the look of your daybed with the overall look of the room.
